Carragheen moss from Quality Sea Veg is a bushy reddish brown plant which grows abundantly along the Irish Coast, hence why it is also known as Irish Moss. Carragheen moss has been used for centuries for its natural gel which is extracted when simmered in water or milk. Carragheen moss is added to many food products because of its emulsifying and gelling properties. It is used to thicken foods and it produces a colourless jelly like consistency which is a vegetarian or vegan answer to gelatine.
Carragheen moss has been considered to have health benefits in Ireland as it was traditionally used as a cold and cough remedy.
